The Process & Precision Behind Every Custom Window Treatment
Rendition of what drapery panels will look like on a photo of client’s window.
While the options for retail window treatments have increased, there is still a vast difference between custom and retail. I had one client who was frustrated with her retail window treatments, as they just weren't what she needed. Then she found me. After the installation, she was so happy and said, “I should have called you first”.
Step #1: Personalized Consultation & Design Considerations
The first step with a new client begins with an email or phone call during which needs, deadlines, budget and styles are discussed.
Next, I visit their home and take photos and measurements while they look through fabric books. I send a photo with measurements, treatment, and chosen fabric to a great company that creates a rendering I share with my client.
Measuring the fabric and checking for flaws is an important step before fabrication.
Step #2: Custom Craftsmanship in my Workroom
Once everything has been finalized, I schedule the order and let the client know the approximate wait time, which can be anywhere between 6-12 weeks. During this wait time, I order the fabric, supplies, and materials and check them in so that I have everything needed when I’m ready to begin.
From start to finish, I keep the client updated: “I have the fabric,” “I will be starting your project next week,” etc. The 6-12 week wait may seem like a very long time, but I do not have employees or helpers–every order that leaves my workroom has been created by me.
Tabling the panel: side hems and finished length set. The tools I have make this an efficient process.
Step #3: Professional Installation & Finishing Touches
Delivery day! When I know the project will be completed, I contact my client and installer to coordinate an installation. I deliver the treatments and may assist my installer if needed. After the treatments have been installed, I dress pleats or folds, steam any wrinkles or creases, and for a functional treatment, open and close them. I answer any questions from my client and make sure they are pleased with their new window treatments.
The finished product! Look at the rendering above and compare to the actual panels. (The next step was to recover this loveseat.)
Lovingly Crafted and Built to Last
I know several people who are unhappy with their jobs and ready to retire–not me! I love what I do: meeting wonderful people, handling beautiful fabrics, and creating something that addresses my clients’ needs. I will continue as long as I can.
