In June of 2024, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) mandated laws restricting the use of operating and lift cords for all window treatments, primarily shades. The Window Coverings Manufacturing Association (WCMA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) developed standards for manufacturers (like me) to use for custom and stock shade products.

Prior to this ruling,  free-hanging cords, cord tilts, and cord stops and joiners were allowed but still posed a risk to children and pets. Here’s what you need to know about the new safety regulations…

Breaking Down the Legal Jargon

Simply put, this means no more free hanging or accessible cords on window treatments, and tension devices must be used and installed correctly. These new laws are beneficial as they reduce the risk of strangulation. I keep up to date with news in my industry and have been sampling innovative products for my shades.

These motorized shades operate with a push of a button on the rechargeable wand seen here on the right side of each shade.

Our New and Improved Products & Standards

When I first started making shades 30 years ago, the standard for shades was pulleys and cord locks and so many long or loose cords. Yikes! I've since updated my lift systems to be either cordless or attach tension devices to the bead loop which is installed on the wall. I will always meet and/or exceed the safety guidelines in my shades.

Why? I care about my clients and their families!

Our Dedication to Your Safety

If you have corded window treatments in your home, please check them for safety. Are there accessible cords on the back? When pulled up, are there long cords dangling down? It may be possible to retrofit them to eliminate risk; if not, maybe it's time to replace them with higher-quality lift systems.

Roman shades operate by a cord loop securely attached to the inside of the window frame.
