3 Ways to Dress Your Patio Doors for Style and Comfort
I love patio doors, whether they are sliding glass or hinged. They are perfect for optimizing your view and can help a small room seem larger. They also bridge outdoor living with an open concept space.
Ultimately, patio doors look best when "dressed," so today, I'm sharing how to dress your patio door with style…
1. Select Beautiful yet Functional Drapery
Functioning drapery panels on patio doors are beautiful because the fabric softens the expanse of the glass, and with multiple layers of fabric, they help insulate as well. Fabrics that work well are cotton and cotton blends that will retain the pleats and are stable enough for any moisture in the air.
One drawback is that these panels are almost always one-way draw, and the fabric will block some of the glass if you don't have much wall space next to the door.
2. Weigh Your Options with Shades or Panel Tracks
There are other options if you don't want a large drapery panel. Top-down or bottom-up cell shades are ideal for providing privacy without compromising your view and also help insulate the glass. However, cell shades are limited in width or length.
So you may want to consider panel tracks. They come in woven woods and shade fabrics and can be sheer or light filtering. But, similar to a drapery panel, you may block part of the glass when the panel track slides open (this also depends on available wall space).
3. Consider a Cornice for Your Patio Door
Cornices and valances are a great solution for adding a pop of color or when you love that splurge-worthy fabric, but a full drapery panel is out of your budget.
They are also ideal for hiding drapery hardware or shades when up. Before planning a cornice or valance, look at the other windows in the room. It may look odd if there is a big difference in the finished heights of cornices on windows and the patio door.
Patio door options are not limited to the ones I suggested. Wood blinds, vertical blinds with or without sheers, and ripple fold panels work well too.
