3 Behind-the-Scenes Details of Our Favorite Home Renovation Shows
If you are like me, you love to see before and after photos of a room or home remodel, especially from renovation TV shows. Have you ever wondered about the process or how it all really happens? I'll be sharing some information about details that happen behind the scenes in real life.
Detail #1: All Design Decisions Are Made Before Demo Day
All decisions on design work have been decided BEFORE any work begins so that building permits can be applied for and approved, and work can be scheduled. The new drywall most likely isn't completed before the exterior of the home is finished. And demo before finishes have been chosen? Nope, everything has been decided on to fit within budget before demo day.
Detail #2: The Timeline is Well-Planned and Realistic
While it may seem like tradespeople are working around the clock to meet deadlines, this isn't always portrayed accurately. Most often, projects are completed during normal business hours.
An exception to this is when I worked with other members of the Indiana Chapter of WCAA (Window Coverings Association of America). On two different occasions we worked on projects for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and we were fully aware we would not have much time to complete the items we had volunteered to create.
Detail #3: The Total Investment Includes All Labor & Materials
Even when the narrator shares what the budget was and if they went over or not, true costs are not reflected. The sponsors of the shows often donate labor, furnishings or appliances. For a project that the Indiana Chapter worked on in 2009, donated items and time would have cost over $10,000. I can honestly say that because I was donating my time and skills while working under a tight deadline, the quality of my work didn't meet my usual standard!
If you are unsure of how to plan or budget for a renovation, reach out to a designer or builder far in advance. A professional can help you understand the process, timeline and investment involved based on the project. When you have the facts, you can decide if the project is right for you or not.
