Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt comfortable or uneasy? Did you know why? I'm sure the color palette was one of the main reasons.

You may have heard that blue is a calming color, whereas red emotes excitement. While this holds true in general, personal experiences with color also play a very important role in color preferences.

When it comes to the design of your home, here are 3 reasons why the color palette matters…

Creating Cozy and Comfortable Rooms

For most people, warm, neutral earth tones are cozy. Inviting, safe, and soothing, they would be perfect for bedrooms, dens, and retreat areas. Neutral does not mean boring! Neutrals are perfect for showcasing beautiful artwork, colorful accent pillows, and throws.

Evoking Emotion While Making an Impact

Let's say you love the color green and want a vibrant room. Choose a complementary color, shades of red in this case, or two split complementary colors, like shades of red-violet and red-orange. These would be great in a kitchen or entertainment area.

Adding complementary and split complementary colors adds impact to a space.

Soothing a Space with Subtle Shades

In bedrooms and bathrooms where you want a subtle and soothing atmosphere, choose a monochromatic color scheme.

Choose one dominant color and make changes in texture and saturation (lighter and darker) to add interest to your room. Think of a peaceful walk through a forest where you see many shades of green in different textures.

The relationship between color and emotion is not the same for all people. Life experiences, cultures, and backgrounds greatly affect these relationships. I listen to my clients describe how they want the room to feel, and I help them choose colors and textiles that will meet those expectations.
