There is a wide variety of fabrics to choose from for window coverings, which can be overwhelming. No longer are we limited to antique satin for draperies and plain sheers or cotton prints for curtains. Not all fabrics are the right choice for a room. Linen fabrics are beautiful in living rooms and bedrooms but can be a disaster in a bathroom.

Today, I'm sharing 3 tips to help you choose the best fabric for your curtains...

Tip #1: Look at Your Lighting

Consider the room and the light you want to control or let in. Do you want a darkened bedroom for better sleeping? You can block the light coming in by using panels with multiple linings or layers. In a commonly used room or one facing north, you may only want to filter the light. Open weave fabrics such as casements or lightweight fabrics are ideal.

The cellular shade filters light and provides privacy during the day. When closed, the black out lined panels darken the room for a good night’s sleep.

Tip #2: Consider Your Home's Insulation

Are the windows in your home older and possibly drafty? Window coverings with heavier fabric and/or multiple linings provide excellent insulation from heat or cold. Layering treatments, panels, and shades can also help.

Tip #3: Choose How You Want to Hang

Once you have the fabric chosen, consider how your panels or curtains will hang. Hems hovering just above the floor are great if you prefer a tailored style. Hems just "kissing" the floor are a little more relaxed, and hems puddling on the floor can feel more cozy or dramatic.

Still not sure which fabric is best for the room you have in mind? I understand it can be overwhelming or confusing, and I can help narrow the selections based on your needs.
